Boat Rock Paid Off Through Triple Crown Fundraising
Hey Climbers: I just wanted to pass on some particulars about the finale this weekend--everthing went extremely well, and the weather was absolutely perfect. We raised over $1,200 in climber donations for Boat Rock.
With the help of the Chaco/Sweet Water Event in ATL, RockCreek/Chaco custom sandal sales at TCrown, climber donations at each of the three events (@$3,600), and TCrown donations to Boat Rock, I'm sure we will have raised enough $$ to cover the rest of the BR note.
As soon as we have a tally on the final expenses (buses, catering, printing, tees, et al) we'll make the official Triple Crown donation to the SCC and CCC as well.
We also raised $2,500 for Habitat for Humanity on Sunday--most of the climbers competing at that event also donated their winnings to Habitat--the HFH representative gave major kudos to the SCC and Triple Crown at the pavilion, and especially on Talk Radio and the local tv news. Habitat is certainly a great cause and the donation provided much needed positive PR for the climbing community that reached the general public.
Major thanks came from the clubhouse manager at Montlake on Saturday--they wanted to pass on sincere thanks to the entire climbing community for supporting the golf club--They truly appreciate our help and support up there--
Montlake requested to have some of our guides--Jim and I met with the clubhouse manager today to donate the remaining guides. We'll mail a care package to the Luken's again too--
We also had a great turn-out at the Rock/Creek (Tommy and Beth Slideshow)-- 160 thru the door and 110 stayed for the show. With the help of Rock/Creek and Tommy and Beth, the SCC also received some great PR via a podcast on Friday as well. MAJOR THANKS (again and again) to R/C for all of their help throughout the entire series.
We'll work on a full write-up this week and get a posting asap--
Special thanks to everyone from the Chattanooga Climbers' Association that came out and volunteered their time (all weekend!) for the cause--
Scott Howell
Ben Johnson
Jonathan Clardy
Ryan Harris
John Dorough
Steven Farmer
Chad Fowler
Alex Fitzner
Kirk Brode

Alison Dorough

I'm sure I'm forgetting others--we had a great volunteer crew for sure. MANY from ATL and especially North Carolina.
Best,
Jim Horton and Chad Wykle

LRC Trail Day April 22, 2006
Rock/Creek, the brick-and-mortar shop behind all the great products on ClimbingGear.com, along with Chaco and Five Ten, is sponsoring a trail day up at one of our favorite crags, Little Rock City. This incredible boulder field is owned by a Golf Club and the owners graciously allow us to climb on their private property. As a way of giving back, and in an effort to ensure future access, we have periodic trail days at LRC.
Our next event is planned for April 22, 2006, at 9AM, and will last about 5 hours.
Location: Mont Lake Golf Course, Soddy-Daisy TN
On tap will be two activities for the Montlake Golf Club:
1) Parking lot landscaping and cleaning
2) Cleaning out dead wood from climbing areas
3) Re-establishing trails in climbing areas
4) Cleaning (and climbing!) as many problems as possible
We are also planning to have some hotdogs, hamburgers and cokes for participants. We're not sure yet if the SCC will be covering this or if Montlake will be "cooking."
"I spoke with the landowner's wife a few weeks ago--she was very thankful for the climbing community and the work that we have done in the boulderfield and on the golf course. She, her husband and the community at Montlake have been very good to us, and I passed that fact and thanks on to her--just wanted to share that with you all. Thanks for all that you have done and continue to do for LRC and the community of Montlake." says Chad Wykle

ClimbingGear Joins Castle Rock Initiative

ClimbingGear.com's parent company, Rock/Creek Outfitters, has just joined the initiative to lease Castle Rock in order to make it open to climbers by making a financial gift. As the Southeastern Climbers' Coalition's Web site explains, "Castle Rock is located approximately 3 miles northwest of downtown Jasper, Tennessee. You catch a glimpse of this proud buttress as you drive up the hill towards Foster Falls (look to your right above Castle Rock church). Castle Rock is located on private land and has technically been closed to the climbing public. In the fall of 2004, The Southeastern Climbers Coalition began negotiations with the landowners to open access to this area. A verbal committment has been reached and a lease should be signed during the month of October 2005."
"Castle Rock is approximately 1/2 mile long of 80 to 120 ft. tall bullet sandstone. Castle Rock is known for many 5.11 and 5.12 sport climbs and one of the hardest routes in the state of Tennessee - Apes on Acid (5.13d). Castle Rock is listed as a 4 star (out of 5) crag in Tim Toula's "Rock and Road" guidebook."
